Many dog owners are changing the
diet of their pets by going raw and resorting to traditional meal diet of dogs.
However, this meaty meal is not fresh but the one that is frozen and
pre-prepared for the convenient usage. Therefore, the risk of contamination of
such food with bacteria and germs is high. Moreover, there is no make-believe
research conducted for raw-meat diets that prove
it is nutritionally better than the dry and canned foods. In fact, these raw
foods rather make breeding grounds for infection-causing micro-organisms.
Reasons That You Shouldn’t Feed Raw Meat To Dogs
Reason 1 –
In a research conducted on
commercial samples taken from the Netherlands,
the team found the presence of E-coli. in
¼ of the products and also deduced the existence of Salmonella in almost 25% of
the samples. And to their surprise, Listeria species were also present heavily
in most of the specimens. This poses a heavy risk to pets’ health. If the contamination is heavy, it can lead to
adverse health situations in dogs.
Reason 2 –
Although dogs are only mildly
affected by these bacteria, they can
cause heavy infection in humans if they come in contact with the pet infected
with these pathogens. The infection can be extremely dangerous for pregnant ladies,
infants, kids and people with weak immunity.
Moreover, if the people handle
contaminated meat they can directly contract the disease which is why raw meat
is a strict no-no due to public health concerns.
Reason 3 –
Another big reason for sticking
to a conventional dry diet is that those dogs have certainly evolved over time, just like
humans. Their nutritional requirements though remain the same to most extent
but the source of nutrition has changed. Reason being, they can no more be
compared to the animals that stay in the forests. Today’s pets are accustomed
and genetically evolved to having veggies, fruits and many foods that we humans
eat.
Reason 4 –
Commercial raw meats available on
the market may contain carcinogens. Especially,
red meats. They have been declared carcinogenic by the WHO and thus must be
strictly avoided.
Reason 5 –
You probably don’t need to kill
any other animal to feed it to your Fido. There are many vegetarian options in
the market that provide plentiful of nutrition when provided in an adequate
amount.
Conclusion
Although we do know that raw meat
has loads of proteins and vitamins that improve health and skin of pets, the
treated or pre-prepared meats can be actually more harmful if they are
contaminated. Animals that are pets usually don’t get fresh raw meat and people
generally buy treated flesh instead. Therefore, it is better to avoid giving a
raw-meat diet to your pet than risking their as well as their owner’s lives. Moreover,
why to kill someone to feed someone else, right?!
